I was looking through some of my stuff and ran across my cases with some computer games in it. It got me to thinking back when computer games where popular. Years back computer games got very popular. Of course being a computer geek Jeff got into these for a while. One of the biggest games was Half Life. Half Life won over 50 game of the year awards. One of the great things about Half Life was the ability of individuals to create mods of the game. Creating mods became so popular Jeff bought the domain name Game-Mods.com and created a website. Here is a link to the site back in 2001 Game-Mods.com. Thanks to the Wayback Machine we can see sites that have long since went away.
Jeff was only 12 years old when he started Game-Mods. Game-Mods grew fairly quickly. There was lots of multiplayer mods that were played over the Internet with people everywhere. Team Fortress Classic and Counter Strike was 2 of the most popular. Jeff had mod developers posting news about their mods along with pictures. There was interviews with developers and much more. He had a small staff of volunteers helping with the site. Jeff also sold Game-Mods merchandise through CafePress.com. He even worked out some deal to host sites for mod developers. He acquired some sponsors and affiliates to help with the cost.
Game-Mods became quite popular in the gaming circles. Some of the older people may remember a TV show called Tech TV. Jeff and I watched it all the time. It was about all kinds of tech with a strong focus on computers. They even built a high dollar gaming computer on there. Thanks to the Wayback Machine here is a link to Tech TV website Tech TV. During one of the TV shows they were discussing the popularity of computer game mods and they talked briefly about Jeff’s website Game-Mods.com. That was a big surprise when we were watching Tech TV and they started talking about his site Game-Mods. Jeff was so excited his website had made it on Tech TV. And I was so proud of what Jeff had accomplished.
Later on Jeff was contacted by a person wanting to buy Game-Mods from him at very good price. But Jeff wasn’t interested in the money and declined his offer. Eventually computer games died down with the popularity of multiplayer games with X-box and PlayStation and other forms of gaming. Game-Mods popularity was dropping and Jeff’s interest changed to web hosting and PHP development and he let Game-Mods die out.
Game-Mods.com domain name was later bought and a site about games was on the Internet, but recently Game-Mods.com domain name has come back on the market.
